Petition over the closure of Suggitts Lane crossing handed to parliament.

A petition has been signed by 4,000 residents opposing the closure of Suggitts lane crossing. The petition was handed to the House Of Commons by MP Martin Vickers on Monday.

He has asked that the gates be opened while negotiations take place. He is believed to have put forward a number of alternative safety measures that would protect users and enable continuous access to the North promenade and foreshore.

The alternative route takes people over very busy roads which could present a greater risk. Also, Fuller Street bridge has 77 steps and can not be accessed by disabled people or people with pushchairs.

To be able to reach the same point without using the bridge is a journey of around 1.7 miles.  Despite Lyn Sayles and her campaigners who worked so hard in producing the petition, Network  Rail closed the crossing last Tuesday.
