Workers in hospitals are attacked every other day.

The number of attacks on hospital staff has hit a record high.

Staff at Grimsby’s Diana Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General Hospital were more likely to be attacked than the national average.

It is believed that about two-fifths of the assaults were done by someone who did not know what they were doing was wrong. It could be because of severe learning disability, mental health, or because of treatment, they had received.

In England, hospital staff were assaulted 23,000 times in 2017/18.

A contributing factor often is alcohol, especially in emergency departments, and there must be more done to reduce alcohol abuse. The BMA believe that measures should be put in place to minimise the likelihood of attacks. And make sure that anyone who assaults a member of staff is dealt with appropriately.
