From successful prosecutions, new litter and dog fouling enforcement, public space protection orders and CCTV at fly-tipping hotspots, North East Lincolnshire Council has been cracking down on environmental crimes.
People have told us they want a zero tolerance approach on litter, fly-tipping and dog fouling, which is why we’re enforcing the law to keep our streets clean and green and make local residents proud.
The council’s regulatory and enforcement service consists of Trading Standards and the compliance team, covering environmental enforcement and education.
The compliance team cover a wide range of issues, including abandoned vehicles, stray dogs, statutory nuisance and welfare funerals.
Since November 2017, the council has brought seven successful prosecutions to court – one for fly-tipping, one for duty of care, three for statutory noise nuisance offences and two for failing to clear waste in a garden.
CCTV cameras have also been installed at various fly-tipping hotspots across North East Lincolnshire.
As well as this, the Trading Standards team enforces consumer protection, which includes fair trading, intellectual property, scams, food standards and legal metrology.
Last year, they brought 10 successful prosecution cases to court – two for allergies in takeaway food and eight for the sale of illicit tobacco.
A total of 550 hover boards which posed a safety risk were also seized in September last year.
Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said: “The work our Trading Standards and compliance team do is invaluable to keeping our streets clean, green and safe.
“Since private enforcement patrols began in November 2018 to the end of April, 966 fines have been issued to people who litter, leave their dog’s mess or throw litter from a vehicle.
“The team target locations in line with community reports and undertake patrols in every ward each month.
“We will continue to carry out robust enforcement to make sure people take pride in their community.”
