Sexual infection cases have hit a 40 year high and many are pensioners.

The sexual infection gonorrhoea has reached a forty year high amid a rise in casual sex, figures show. The blame according to doctors is the popularity of dating apps such as Tinder. And TV shows like Love Island normalising casual sex, also older people finding new sexual partners after divorce or bereavement.

Over 56,000 people were diagnosed with gonorrhea last year. With pensioners experiencing the highest proportional increase. Sexually transmitted infections have risen to their highest level since 1978.

Previously when older people were widowed or divorced it would be the end of their sex lives. But now they want to get out there again. And because they haven’t used condoms for many years in their marriage they don’t start using them again now. Many of them would make sure their grandchildren used condoms but do not use them themselves.

Almost half the 4447,694 cases of STIs were most common in 15-24-year-olds. But rates of STIs also increased by more than a quarter for people over 65.

The data also revealed that 7,541 cases of syphilis were reported which is thought of as a Victorian disease, rates have almost doubled in a decade.

Dr. Gwenda Hughes from NHS England said No matter what age you are or what type of relationship you are in, it is very important to look after your sexual health.
