Next year’s May Day Bank Holiday moved to Friday so that we can commemorate VE Day.

The May day bank holiday will take place on Friday, May 8th next year. This is so that we can mark 75 years since the end of the Second World War when Germany surrendered to Allied forces on May 8th, 1945.

But one couple are not happy they set the date for their wedding for Sunday, May 2nd believing guests would have the next day off work. They set the date for the bank holiday weekend in the hope that many of their guests who live away would be able to travel and stay overnight. They are now faced with many of their guests unable to attend their wedding.

The business secretary Greg Clark announced the change at the weekend. Saying it will ensure as many people as possible will have the opportunity to remember and to honour our heroes of the Second World War. It will allow a three day weekend of commemorative events.
