There was another first yesterday when Grimsby Corinthians fielded their first female player in competition

The team travelled down to Grantham to play in an over 50s competition organised by Long Bennington Walking Football club and saw us play against the hosts, Stamford Strollers and Sleaford Academicals.

Having beaten Long Bennington and Stamford 1-0 Corinthians needed just a draw in their final game to fetch home the winners trophy but a defensive lapse saw us lose 1-0 and miss out on goal difference to Stamford Strollers with three teams finishing level on 6 points. A good day out with good performances by all players with the age range of Corinthians players ranging from our history maker Gemma Capes at 34 to our ever dependable goalkeeper Carl reeves at 70 years old. An image of the team attached below. Skipper for the day Steve King says, ” I thought as a team and what we were up against we played very well, unlucky not to win it. As for Gemma the first female to play in our team never looked out of place once well played all.” and Jan Milner  Retro Rovers and Doncaster Belles , a long standing pathfinder for female football over many years says ” Well done Mick and the lads for being inclusive when played the right way there is no need for physicality and players like Gemma should be allowed to join in the fun xx”

The club now look forward to their own summer Tournament that takes place at the Bradley Football Centre on Wednesday 17th July with 14 teams travelling to take part in what promises to be a great day of walking football.
