Increased demand for CARE Food Larder

Increased demand for food parcels has caused a Grimsby charity to make urgent changes in order to refocus on its core work.

CARE (Christian Action & Resource Enterprise) is a charity dedicated to relieving poverty, hardship and distress to those in need in NELincs.  Passionate about bringing dignity and compassion into the lives of the marginalised, vulnerable and disadvantaged, they developed a means of donating emergency food parcels to those in temporary difficulty.  When the Daily Bread Food Larder opened in 2006, they gave out no more than 300 such parcels per year, but recently this has grown to around 3000 per year!

This huge rise in demand reflects the great needs in society but has begun to put a strain on CARE’s resources – human, premises and financial.  Reluctantly, they have made the decision to stop direct public access for emergency food parcels from Monday 1st July.

However, they are not giving up on helping those who need such food parcels.  CARE will continue to promote the Food Larder through their network of churches, schools, supermarkets and individual donors, who have been very generous in the amount of food and money given.  Without this network of donors, CARE would not have been able to meet the needs of many families and individuals in NE Lincs.

CARE will continue to collect any food donated to them through working with their existing links.  They are also developing new partnerships with other local food bank providers, for example the Rock Foundation and Oasis Community Hub; and will deliver food to them for onward donation to those who find themselves in an urgent emergency need.  CARE will also work with any other local food provider that wishes to partner with them, to ensure that as many local people as possible will have food to nourish themselves when they find themselves in a crisis.

The CARE Food Larder access point in Immingham will remain open 30th September 2019, in order to assist residents that have a need for food parcels, whilst additional funding is sought.

If you wish to donate food to the CARE Food Larder, or help them in any other way, they can be contacted by phone on 01472 232310 or by email at enquiries@carenelincs.co.uk

Mary Vickers moved to North East Lincolnshire in 2010, from the Wiltshire/Hampshire border, to become Urban and Industrial Chaplain NELincs. Made redundant in 2017, she's maintained many of her connections within the business, faith, and other local communities. She's also decided to stay here rather than return to either the south or her husband's native Yorkshire, so that she can continue to enjoy and help promote the positives of NELincs.
