Investigation launched after serious road traffic collision leaves three in hospital

It happened on Little Coates Road with the junction of Broadway around 1.30am. It involved a stolen black Honda CBR 125 and a Red Vauxhall Corsa.

Emergency crews including the air ambulance attended. The 18-year-old man who was riding the bike sustained a fracture to his neck, arm and leg as well as internal injuries. His injuries are thought to be life changing.

A 17-year-old and a 16-year-old boy were also seriously injured and taken to hospital with tissue damage and a suspected broken rib.

All three were on the bike at the time and weren’t wearing helmets. The motorbike had been stolen from a property in Grimsby earlier in the night.

A 22-year-old man who was driving the car left the scene of the collision. He has been arrested on suspicion of three counts of GBH, three counts of dangerous driving, and one count of failing to stop.

The three in hospital are currently under investigation for an alleged burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.

It is believed this incident was as a result of an altercation that occurred shortly before the collision.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Kerry Bull from Grimsby CID said: “We have launched an investigation following this incident in Grimsby in the early hours of today.

“My team are investigating what happened before the collision and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen it, saw either vehicle beforehand or have any information in connection with this.

“The three males who were on the bike were all taken to hospital. Our primary focus at this point is to ensure that they are recovering well.

“I want to reiterate the very obvious risks of riding motorbikes in this manner. Three people on one motorbike not wearing helmets is not only illegal but extremely dangerous.

“Such behaviour proves a very real risk to the wider public. We have been giving warnings about this for a long time  and we know that nuisance motorbike riding and motorbike crime is a concern for residents across the force area.

“This incident very clearly highlights these dangers and will undoubtedly change the lives of the four young people involved.

“We have officers  across the force area who are working very hard to crack down on motorbike related crime as part of Operation Yellowfin, and to prevent such incidents from happening.

“We also constantly appeal for the public’s help with motorbike crime. We want to know anything about any suspicious behaviour and where stolen bikes may be stored.

“We have appealed to parents to make sure they know where there children are and what they’re doing. The three injured people in this are young and in their teens.

“Riding any vehicle like this a nuisance, it’s antisocial, and it can very easily lead to tragic consequences including serious injuries and fatalities.

“There are reasons why motorcycle training is well regulated, and why people are taught to ride bikes in a considerate and safe manner. There are also very good reasons why wearing a helmet is mandatory.

“This is one example of why these regulations are in place.”
