This will make you think twice if a neighbour asks you to look after their house.

If you’ve got good neighbours you may do favours for each other from time to time but this may make you think twice.

For one good neighbour it all went wrong. She was asked to keep an eye on her neighbours house when they went on holiday. It went awfully wrong when the property was burgled because of her negligence.

She went into the house everyday to pick the post up and let the cat in and out which she had done many times in the past.

But in the middle of the seven days in which she was checking the house, she found it had been burgled.

When the police came to the house they found no forced entry which meant that the door was left unlocked. She let the cat in the night before and had forgotten to lock it.

She apologised over and over again to the neighbours and explained what had happened. They said they understood and would make an insurance claim.

But their neighbours told her the claim was rejected because the back door had been left open and had been under her care.

They expect her to reimburse them for the stolen goods which came to £8,000 and they have issued legal proceedings against her when she refused to pay.

They claim she was negligent in leaving the door open and that is what caused their £8,000 loss.

This claim may or may not succeed but it certainly would make you think twice before agreeing to look after a neighbours property.
