Skip It arrives in Grant Thorold Park today

The next event is being hosted by East Marsh Involve and East Marsh United on Friday 26 July, from 10am to 6pm, Grant Thorold Park (Rutland Street entrance), East Marsh, Grimsby DN32 8BT

Community Groups and other organisations were invited to bid to stage their own pop-up recycling centres as part of a ground-breaking new pilot project from the Council.

The response was fantastic and will see volunteers work alongside staff from the council and its waste management contractor NEWLINCS to help people get rid of their household junk for free.

About six tonnes was collected from about 180 visitors at the Skip It event held with Waltham Parish Council on Tuesday 16 July.

The confirmed dates and locations so far for 2019 include:

• Centre 4 and the Community Shop: Thursday 8 August, 8am to 4pm, Sutcliffe Avenue shops, Grimsby DN33 1AD
• Welholme Works: Tuesday 20 August, 10am to 6pm, Weelsby Woods, Grimsby DN32 8PW
• Park Ward Together: Friday 23 August, 10am to 6pm, Barrett’s Recreational Ground, Grimsby DN32 0BX
• Littlecoates Primary Academy: Tuesday 10 September, 8am to 4pm, Duke of York Gardens, Corporation Road, Grimsby
• Haverstoe Community and Cleethorpes BeachCare: Wednesday 11 September, 10am to 6pm, Haverstoe Park, Cleethorpes DN35 0DP
• Healing Parish Council: Monday 14 October, 10am to 6pm, Poplar Road Playing Field car park, Poplar Road, Healing
• New Waltham Parish Council: Tuesday 15 October 10am to 6pm, New Waltham Community Hall car park (Greenlands), St Clements Way, New Waltham DN36 4GU.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment, said:

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the interest from community groups and organisations that we have upped the number of Skip It events being held in 2019.

“We were planning to do six but the response has been incredible so we will accommodate all nine applications and see when we can do more.

“The first two Skip It events of 2019 were held with Lincolnshire Housing Partnership and these were a great success so we want build on that momentum to stage more events with them.

“The enthusiasm and interest from these groups to hold their very own pop-up recycling event is impressive, it shows people take pride in the area and I’m grateful to all of them.

“With the community’s help, and the continuing support or our waste management contractor NEWLINCS, we can give even more people the opportunity to get rid of unwanted furniture and other household junk easily and for free.”

Cllr Swinburn added:

“Since it started last year Skip It is also making waves nationally. Other councils have contacted us about the project and the Environment Agency has updated the way it issues permits for temporary waste collection points as a result of what we’ve been doing here in North East Lincolnshire.”

Skip It started in the summer of 2018 as a new way to help people get rid of their household junk for free. Pop-up recycling points were set up for a day in each of the area’s 15 wards.

People brought everything from mattresses and washing machines to garden clippings and fence panels – most rubbish was recycled or sent to the Energy from Waste plant to generate electricity.

Skip It also gave people the chance to tidy up their neighbourhoods by clearing rubbish from areas where it was causing a nuisance.

There will be no recycling boxes and no council exhibition trailer at the 2019 events.

Some items left at Skip It will be sold at the Grimsby Community Recycling Centre. Proceeds go to local charities and good causes.

It’s essential that people taking waste and recycling to the Skip It collection points follow the site instructions and listen to instructions from staff to keep safe.
