By After having Saturdays 4 Probate & Wills ECB Yorkshire South League game at Tickhill washed out without a ball being bowled, Cleethorpes turned their attention to staging the Area Final of the ECB Vitality club t20 Competition on Sunday.
In cloudy but dry conditions there was plenty of excitement for a good sized crowd boosted by followers from the competing clubs.
The three games produced 794 runs on the day with spectators having to keep an eye on proceedings as 25 sixes were hit, as well as 67 other boundaries.
Yorkshire South Premier League side Sheffield Collegiate, no strangers to Chichester Road, came out on top and will now represent their league in the Regional Final which will be played August 18th.
In the first game of the day Collegiate were almost undone by Lincolnshire side Bourne with the game being decided from the penultimate ball, with the last pair at the wicket. Bourne were bowled out for 114, with Jamie Carrington returning the best bowling figures of the day, taking 4-11 from his four overs. Collegiate lost wickets at important stages and it was left to their skipper Josh Varley to slam the 5th ball of the final over to the fence, watched from the other end by a nervous last man.
The second game between Cuckney, from the Notts League and Derbyshire League side Denby, could have gone either way. The Notts side batting first made 140, with Lincolnshire player Nick Keast hitting a rapid 36. The well supported Denby side looked favourites to book a place in the days final while former Derbyshire batsman Peter Burgoyne was at the wicket.
He looked in complete control as he smashed 4 sixes and a further four boundaries in the days top individual score of 72. However after his dismissal wickets fell regularly and Cuckney eventually secured victory by just 8 runs.
Cuckney won the toss and decided to bat first in the final game, and in no time were reduced to 20-4. They were rescued by former Meggie Tom Keast and Joe Hayes who added 100 for the 5th wicket. Both players completed their half centuries before the innings closed on a challenging 144-5.
The highest score of the day was needed if Collegiate were going to be successful. Opening batsmen Harry McNeilly and Simon Guy, the former Yorkshire player, gave them the perfect start with a partnership of 71. Guy and Henry Eldred then added 50 before the South Yorkshire side coasted to victory with only 3 wickets lost and almost 4 overs to spare. Guy carried his bat, finishing on 71 from just 44 balls after hitting 9 boundaries and 2 sixes.
