North East Lincolnshire Council’s Recycle Cycles scheme is looking for bikes to help young offenders learn new skills.
People are being asked to donate old and unwanted men’s and women’s bicycles to help with the project.
The project gives young people from the Youth Offending Service the chance to repair old bikes and give them a new home.
Overseen by fully trained mechanics, young offenders strip down the bikes, check for damage, clean them up and re-assemble them so they can be put back into use.
All work is done as part of the young offenders’ work towards paying back their community.
Councillor Ron Shepherd, cabinet member, for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “This scheme gives young offenders an opportunity to learn new skills, help someone else and give something back to the community.”
“It also offers people the chance to get active without the price tag of a brand new bike, and means people can make the most of the local cycle routes.”
By donating a bike, you can help people on lower incomes and reduce the waiting times for those waiting for a new bike.
Overseen by fully trained mechanics, young offenders strip down the bikes, check for damage, clean them up and re-assemble them so they can be put back into use.
The revamped bikes are donated to someone in need – such as people who need a bike to get to work or school or reduce their travel costs and are not able to meet the cost of a new bike.
All bikes are given a full safety check before they are given away. A bicycle helmet is required in order to collect a bike.
Unfortunately there is no service to collect bikes, but donations are accepted at the William Molson Centre.
If you have a bike you no longer need, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
The project is being run by North East Lincolnshire Council’s Youth Offending Service.
Bikes can be donated to Recycle Cycles at The William Molson Centre, Kent Street, Grimsby, DN32 7DJ. Open Monday to Friday 8.30am to—5pm.
