Wolf whistling bricklayers could soon be history as the Government wants to recruit more woman into the mostly male-dominated construction industry.
The Government has launched a £10 million campaign to start this week to diversify the building industry. One of the aims is for bosses to avoid questions such as Do you intend to have a baby? when they interview woman candidates.
The Construction Industry Training Board expects that nearly 170,000 new jobs are expected to be created by 2023. But the concerns are that because of Brexit uncertainty these vacancies may not be filled as the building industry attracts many workers from outside the UK. The current lack of women and ethnic minority workers is because building firms often rely on promoting vacancies by word of mouth rather than formal adverts.
The money will be invested in hundreds of colleges, construction firms, councils, housing associations and charities to connect employers with people who may not traditionally be expected to go into the industry.
