Divorce rate soars among silver splitters.
Figures show that divorce in the over 55’s has now doubled, while the number of divorces in younger couples is falling. There is a rise in so-called silver splitters divorce during retirement is now big business. Marriage is at a historic low.
It is believed that divorce at older ages has become more common as women have achieved greater financial independence. Looking ahead to the next phase of life can seem pretty daunting if you can’t stand the person you’ll be spending it with. According to statistics, we’re healthier and probably going to live a lot longer maybe 30 years longer than the average retiree once did. Perhaps the surge of later life divorce is the unintended consequence of the so-called longevity bonus.
