You may not need to worry that a cup of coffee before bedtime will stop you sleeping.

There is no need to worry anymore about saying yes to that cup of coffee before bedtime. Researchers are now saying that drinking caffeine near to bedtime will not stop you getting to sleep, as was thought previously.

Alcohol is far more likely to lead to a night of tossing and turning. The study tracked 800 people over six nights and noted whether they had consumed caffeine, alcohol or nicotine before bed.

In the study, almost half of them had a caffeinated drink before bed but no link was found with poor sleep. Those who drank alcohol lost more sleep as did those who smoked.

The study did not take into account how much caffeine was drunk or how sensitive participants were to it. Some people breakdown caffeine faster than others.
