Have you grown up with old wives tales which ones do you still use?

Most of us have grown up with old wives tales such as Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight, Red sky in the morning shepherds warning there are variations to this saying that refer to sailors instead of shepherds. You may remember being told to count sheep to get to sleep, or feed a cold and starve a fever.

Lots of women will have tried the old wives tale that the swing of your wedding ring will determine your baby’s gender. And to this day we still tell our children that sitting to close to the television screen will make you go blind.

Also if you only see one magpie do you salute it and ask how’s your wife and kids? to ward of bad luck.  One my mother always told us was don’t go swimming until an hour after eating or you will sink, and stop pulling faces if the wind blows it will stay like that, and we always believed that if we ate our carrots we would be able to see in the dark.

Are there any old wives tales that you swear by?
