Its that time of year again when many families are struggling to afford new school uniforms.
One mum who has six children has told of the high cost of school uniforms she says that she will have to cut back on food to be able to afford school uniforms.
She has already spent £200 on school uniforms for her children, but she faces more expense as four of her children are set to move to secondary school in the next two years.
A national study by the Department for Education found that parents spend an average of £230 on uniforms per child. Which excludes PE kits which are often branded with school logos. These can add up to £70 onto the uniform bill at primary school age and up to £140 for secondary school kits.
Many secondary schools often require branded clothing that will only be able to be purchased through select providers and not cheaper supermarkets. Which is putting a strain on many families.
Primary schools are usually more lenient when it comes to branded uniforms. It is thought that at least 10 schools in North East Lincolnshire say that wearing such clothing isn’t compulsory.
