A ‘Fareshare’ for hungry children

Fareshare Hull and Humber reports that by the end of the summer holidays about 12,000meals will have been given out to children across Hull.

Like other Fareshare groups across the country, the Hull branch receives surplus food from the food industry.  This food is of excellent quality and is surplus for a whole number of reasons ranging from incorrect bar coding to over-manufacture.  It is never because it is out of date.

They also collect food donated by the public.  At an event in West Park, before the Hull FC match on 17 August, 40 trays of food were donated!

Gathered together at the group’s depot on Malmo Road, all the food received is delivered to a network of 120 Community Food Members (CFMs) who work with disadvantaged people throughout the region.

It’s estimated that about 12,000 meals will have been given to children across Hull during a special summer holiday initiative.  This has also seen the number of kids’ clubs the group provides food to increase from 8 in 2018 to 40 this year.

In the UK, 4.7 million people are living in severe food insecure households, which means their food intake is greatly reduced and children regularly experience physical sensations of hunger.  FareShare’s research shows that 46% of people accessing the services of our charity partners have gone a whole day without a proper meal in the last month.  These figures show just how important donations are to the families in Hull and elsewhere.
