Who would have thought it! A little dusting can add years to your life.
When we are faced with a load of dirty dishes we are tempted to slump in front of the telly and ignore them. But if you do according to scientists you may be lazing your way to an early grave.
They have found that even light household chores like dusting or washing up provide enough exercise to cut substantially the risk of early death. But sitting and lying around all day more than doubles the risk of early death.
The results show that rather than trying to reach unrealistic exercise goals, just staying active could help you live longer. NHS guidelines suggest doing at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week like jogging or cycling. But critics believe this can be off-putting for some and leads them to give up on exercise altogether. The research which is new tracked more than 36,000 adults over six years. An hour of light chores, or five minutes of moderate activity such as vacuuming or mowing the lawn halved the risk of early death. Activity that was more vigorous such as a 24-minute jog or bike ride cut the risk by 60 percent.
The study found that sitting or lying down for nine hours a day not counting sleep more than doubles your chances of dying early.
So get up and do all those household jobs you’ve been avoiding.
