Young people help to CARE for others

A group of fourteen 15 to 17‐year‐old students spent 2 weeks of their summer holidays helping the CARE Food Larder project.

This was part of their National Citizenship Service (NCS).  They raised money by putting on a coffee morning, a bingo morning, and by face-painting on Cleethorpes seafront.

They also made up several food bags.  This involved them thinking about the food items that would allow a family to put together some basic meals during a difficult time such as the school summer holidays.  Historically, this is a time that puts pressure on families, some of whom may already have to rely on emergency food providers in the area.

The food bags were delivered to East Marsh and West Marsh family centres.  Jenny King, the ‘Locality 2 Lead’ at the East Marsh centre, was delighted:

I know just the families that we will give out the bags to today.  This will be a big help to them.

Similar thanks were given by Emma Kennedy, one of the three managers in Locality 4, when bags were delivered to the West Marsh centre.

CARE’s General Manager, Stephen Durkin said:

It is so encouraging when you see what a difference a group of local teenagers can make when they pool their resources and put their minds to helping other less fortunate than themselves in the community.

The group’s fund‐raising efforts resulted in them collecting a total of £600.00.

Stephen Durkin was both delighted and very impressed with this amount:

This money will be spent on food and in the next few days.  CARE will have it delivered to the Rock Foundation to help them meet local demand during the rest of the school holidays.  Whilst CARE have, regrettably, had to stop giving out food parcels to the public from our Hainton Avenue offices because of the strain it put on our own limited resources, we still operate the Food Larder by promoting the needs, collecting donations, and supporting any other food provider who wishes to work with us by delivering the food to them.

Mary Vickers moved to North East Lincolnshire in 2010, from the Wiltshire/Hampshire border, to become Urban and Industrial Chaplain NELincs. Made redundant in 2017, she's maintained many of her connections within the business, faith, and other local communities. She's also decided to stay here rather than return to either the south or her husband's native Yorkshire, so that she can continue to enjoy and help promote the positives of NELincs.
