A cake with a difference

A group of metal detectorists were taken to hospital after unknowingly eating cakes apparently spiked with cannabis in High Melton, near Doncaster.

Metal detectorists from across the country had gathered for the ‘Coil and Soil’ event last weekend.  They were looking forward to 4 days scanning 400 acres of land for treasure.  However, a shared birthday cake resulted in a number of people quickly falling ill.  It is thought that the 50th birthday cake had been laced with cannabis oil as a joke.  As the cake was shared around people began to feel dizzy and unwell.

A large fleet of medical staff were called to the scene, including 8 ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, 2 doctors, 2 clinical supervisors and a Hazardous Area Response Team.  Yorkshire Ambulance Service said two people were treated on the spot.  Police said the 13 people admitted to hospital, some were kept in overnight, but all were later discharged.

A 48-year-old woman from County Durham was arrested in relation to the incident, and has been released on bail.
