Do you know what date the Second World War started?

According to a new poll more than a quarter of Britons do not know what date the Second World War started. War was declared by Britain and France on Germany on September 3rd, 1939. Following Hitler’s invasion of Poland. Of the 2,000 people surveyed 27 percent were not sure of the date.

Four percent even thought that the war began in the year that the Nazis were defeated which was 1945.

Forty-two percent of people thought that Winston Churchill was Prime Minister when war broke out but it was Neville Chamberlain.

The study was to mark the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the war by Ancestry.co.uk who said that the nations knowledge of the war and how it was experienced by our ancestors is lacking.
