Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid a surprise visit to Doncaster Market this morning.
The PM arrived at Doncaster Station on his way to Rotherham for a Conference of the North event at the Magna science museum. Here he will address northern political leaders, and is expected to announce a new body to oversee the Government’s ‘Northern Powerhouse’ strategy.
His whistle stop visit included the Corn Exchange and a walking tour of Doncaster Market. Here, he mingled with both shoppers and traders. He reportedly told one trader
we’re going to get a deal. That’s the plan, anyway. And if we don’t, we’re coming out on October 31. That’s what we’re going to do. Here we go, that’s democracy.
and to another, who sells lobsters in the Fish Market:
We’ve got to take a few claws out of that withdrawal agreement.
From reaction on Twitter, reception from shoppers was mixed with several saying he was a nice man and others exactly the opposite, with one woman saying that ‘people had died because of austerity’.
Doncaster voted 69% to leave in the 2016 EU referendum. It has been regarded as a Labour stronghold. However, both the Brexit Party and the Conservatives are hoping to unseat the town’s three Labour MPs.
