Man protests on Hull roof for over 8 hours

A man has staged a noisy protest on the roof of a house in King Bench Street in Hull, since late morning.

Humberside Police cordoned off much of the street just before mid-day. Initially, access was impossible from Saner Street and Queens Gate Street, but the cordon was later extended to include some neighbouring roads. A number of residents were evacuated.

A police statement at noon said:

Officers are currently on Kings Bench Street, Hull where a man has taken to a roof.
A cordon has been put in place to ensure the safety of everyone nearby and we ask people to please stay away from the area, helping us to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

There’s been a large police presence in the street all afternoon, including some police in riot gear. Their riot shields were used to protect residents as they were evacuated, because the man was throwing debris from the roof. Ambulances, paramedics, and firefighters have been at the scene – the latter with an aerial platform.

The incident ended shortly before 8:25pm, when the man was brought down by firefighters.  He was taken away in an ambulance.
