Should the whole of the United Kingdom ban smacking children as Scotland becomes the first to do so?

It is expected that Scotland is going to become the first country in the UK to ban parents from smacking their children. They will make it a criminal offence. A ban on all physical punishments is expected to be backed overwhelmingly by a Scottish Parliament vote this afternoon.

At the moment parents are allowed to use reasonable physical force to discipline their children.

The Scottish government has backed giving children the same protection from assault as adults.

In a report published in 2015 it was found that the physical punishment of children was more common in the UK than in other countries such as the US, Canada, Italy Germany and Sweden.

The research found that many parents do not think smacking is a good thing but believe that sometimes it’s the only thing that works.

Should smacking children now be banned in the whole of the UK?
