£40k funding for Grimsby Streets history project

Lincs Inspire Libraries, Archives and Arts secure National Lottery support

THE HISTORY and memories of North East Lincolnshire’s streets are set to be uncovered thanks to a grant of just under £40,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Lincs Inspire urge local residents and history enthusiasts to take part in the project named Streets and their Stories, by helping to reveal the history of some the area’s houses, street names, open spaces, public houses and other community buildings.

Commenting on the award, Jennie Cartwright, development officer for Lincs Inspire Libraries, said: “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and are confident the project will appeal to local people.

“Everything and everybody is connected to a street, be it a school, shop, house, place of worship, business, local character, cinema or park and we want to hear your stories!

“It’s a fantastic way to make our local history resources available to a wider range of people and for everyone involved to learn more about our heritage and make their own contributions to local history”.

Over the next two years, Lincs Inspire Libraries, Arts and Archive teams will work with a range of local organisations and members of the community to discover more about North East Lincolnshire’s history.

Using photographs from the Local History collection in Grimsby Library, reminiscence sessions will take place to find out more about the area’s past, with local people sharing and recording their stories, adding the colour of memories to the collection of black and white photographs.

The project will also increase access to the local history photograph collection held in Grimsby Library by creating a website showcasing a broad range of images dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.

If you would like to find out more about Streets and their Stories, have a story to tell, or would like to volunteer to help with the project, attend the launch event at Grimsby Town Hall in the Bremerhaven Room on Friday, November 1, 2019 any time between 10am and 4pm.
