A five-year study has found that nine out of ten workers prefer to go to their jobs when they are ill rather than stay at home.

The days of pulling a sickie are vanishing fast. The report also found that four out of ten workers did not take any time off ill last year.

The survey by Canada Life insurance group says that absence through illness has been falling over the past 25 years. Particularly in private industry, small businesses and among young people.

Working while your unwell is sometimes called presenteeism. But Canada Life says that it can be counterproductive because it signifies that employees do not believe illness is taken seriously in their organisation. It can have a negative impact in the long run in terms of staff retention and productivity.
