CLEETHORPES’ FESTIVAL OF THE SKY WINS BIG AT UK FESTIVAL AWARDS

New Cleethorpes event receives huge acclaim with two awards

Cleethorpes Festival of the Sky has won two prizes at the UK Festival Awards, announced Thursday night at the Troxy in London. Festival of the Sky secured the top prize in the Best New Festival and Best Non-Music Festival categories.

Created by Julia Thompson, Chair of CoastNEL and Sophie Wignall, former Director of Tourism for North East Lincolnshire Council and organised by From The Fields, the specialist company behind festival spectaculars including Bluedot and Kendal Calling, the inaugural Festival Of The Sky took place in Cleethorpes from 6th – 8th September 2019.  The Festival welcomed over 50,000 visitors to the resort’s promenade, Pier Gardens, Discovery Centre and Meridian Showground and delivered a unique programme of arts, culture and outdoor activities over the 3 day event.

Festival of the Sky 2019 included performances and activities by local creatives such as Community Arts Works, The Grimsby Institute and Skygraff as well as internationally-renowned artists, musicians and performers including Walk the Plank, the Urban Astronaut and the Immersive Squid Soup.

The festival was delivered by CoastNEL, the partnership of local businesses, residents, heritage, arts, culture and community groups, working in partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council.  It was supported by the Coastal Communities Fund and Arts Council England as well as key sponsorship by local companies including DFDS.

Julia Thompson, Chair of CoastNEL said: “ We’re thrilled to pieces that what started as an ambitious idea to showcase our amazing home, our beach and resort, has won such prestigious awards. Thanks to the expertise of the team at From the Fields, and the many performers and businesses who worked hard to support the event we can all celebrate a fantastic achievement for our resort.  Thank you to everyone who supported the event online and enjoyed the weekend.’

Dr Roxy Robinson, Festival Director, said: “These awards are for Cleethorpes. This unprecedented achievement demonstrates the level of passion and commitment from all involved, from volunteers to artists and all of our fantastic team. We’re thrilled to be celebrated on such a huge stage and look forward to continuing the fantastic work of Festival of the Sky for the amazing community of Cleethorpes.”
