More phone boxes set to disappear.

BT has now identified a further nine payphones for removal in Grimsby, Cleethorpes, and Immingham in addition to the list of 13 which was released in the summer.

Under the proposals by BT more than 20 public telephone boxes could be removed from the streets of North East Lincolnshire. BT has cited a 90 percent drop in the use of payphones in the last decade.

North East Lincolnshire Council has been asked for feedback on if the newly earmarked nine telephones are still needed. Consultation periods of 90 days are underway.

Local communities are given the chance to adapt their boxes into libraries, defibrillator hubs, or public noticeboards. Chelmsford Ave payphone which is listed for removal has been used 393 times in the last year.

Another on Grimsby Road Cleethorpes listed has been used 285 times. One in Fountains Ave. Grimsby has been used 188 times, and one on Pelham Road Immingham has been used 134 times.

A Phone box on Chichester Road, Cleethorpes shows from BT figures that it was only used for one call, and one on the Kingsway was only used to make eight calls. Others that are newly listed are St Nicholas Drive, Grimsby, Bluestone Lane, Immingham, and North Sea Lane, Cleethorpes.

The use of the public telephone box is in decline and people can contact emergency services using there mobile phone the payphone planning office for BT said. At least 98 percent of the UK have 3G or 4G coverage. This is important because as long as there is network coverage you can call emergency services from your own phone, even if there is no credit or coverage from your own mobile provider. But many residents would like to keep payphones because they can be used for emergencies if someone forgets their mobile phone.

Anyone who may have comments or feedback on the plans to remove the latest nine phone boxes is asked by BT to contact the council.
