Hit and run death: bail denied and Court date set

The man charged with the death of Mark Batty appeared in Court yesterday

Anton Watson, 31, of Worcester Avenue, sobbed on the court room as he stood accused of 6 charges, including death by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, failing to stop at the scene of a collision, failing to report a collision and failing to provide a specimen for analysis and driving without insurance.

Watson is alleged to have hit Mark Batty on Scartho Road in a fatal collision, and fled the scene leaving him dying in the road. It is believed that he was arrested following the discovery of his number plate which was left at the scene of the incident.

It is believed that Mark had visited Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital just before the collision seeking treatment for an injury to his hand. When he left the hospital he walked back home along Scartho Road before being knocked down. The court heard police officers had found Mark unresponsive in the middle of Scartho Road after a collision with a car which failed to stop at the scene.

Watson’s defence applied for bail, but this was subsequently denied and he has been remanded in custody. The case has been sent to Crown Court, scheduled for January 6.

Mark’s close friend Kirsty Glover has established a fundraising page and donations can be made via https://www.gofundme.com/f/markus039s-funeral-costs  gofundme
