Lewis Skelton Inquest: Police release statement

The family of a man shot by police in Hull City Centre will hear the inquest into his death in June 2020.

Lewis, 31, died after police fired two shots in Francis Street in Hull city centre on November 29, 2016.

However, the two police officers involved in the shooting of Mr Skelton might never be identified publicly, as legal representatives for Humberside Police have made an application to keep their identities anonymous.

Following a backlash and a demand to name the officers, Humberside Police have released the following statement from Assistant Chief Constable Chris Noble:

“The application of anonymity is a long standing legal entitlement for witnesses in certain circumstances.  Police officers and staff can be included in this entitlement and it is for the coroner to decide whether the criteria is met which is standard procedure. This does not affect the way that evidence is presented by police officers and staff. They attend court and give evidence in the normal way but without using their identities. We have always been committed to supporting the family of Mr Skelton in understanding the circumstances of his death.”

The inquest is scheduled to begin June 9 next year.
