Police issue statement following shooting on Hessle Road

At a press conference in Hull yesterday afternoon, Deputy Chief Constable Chris Rowley said: “Thank you for your attendance. I will read out a short statement but due to this being a live ongoing incident, I won’t be able to invite any questions.

“Officers were deployed to the area after a report was received that a man was in the street and believed to be in possession of a firearm.

“The man was shot by police during the incident and is currently in hospital in a critical but stable condition. There were no other injuries sustained by anyone.

“A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.

“We are still in the very early stages of the investigation, however we do not believe this incident to have any terrorism connection or links.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the man and also with those officers who were involved in the incident. In incidents like this our officers have to make very difficult decisions in very difficult circumstances.

“I would like to reassure the local community that incidents like this are very rare. We do have officers in the area and if anyone in the area is concerned I would encourage them to speak to one of those officers.

“Additionally, if anyone has any information about the incident please call 101 quoting log 178 of 15/12/19.

“Thank you.”
