Now half a million Whirlpool (Indesit and Hotpoint)washing machines recalled.

Manufacturer Whirlpool is recalling half a million Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines. Up to 519,000 machines that were sold in the UK between October 2014 and February 2018 are at risk of catching fire.

It is believed that seventy-nine fires have been caused by the fault which can develop over time. Whirlpool has previously been embroiled in a four-year scandal over tumble dryer safety being blamed for a spate of fires after a build-up of fluff fell onto the machines heating element.

The machines could be affected by a fault with the door locking system that may cause them to overheat and catch fire. Whirlpool are advising that owners who bought an Indesit or Hotpoint machine during that period to contact Whirlpool to see if they are affected.

Owners are being advised to unplug them and stop using immediately. The recall will begin in early January when customers will be able to claim a free replacement or free in-home repair. Whirlpool has suggested that the washing machines could be used at a cold wash cycle 20C or less.

You can check if your machine is affected by visiting washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.couk or by calling the free hotline on 0800 316 1442 quoting the model number and serial number. The numbers are found inside the door and on a label at the rear of the appliance.
