Travellers refuse to leave Grimsby car park.

Six traveller caravans that are on the former Crawshaw’s Butchers sites have refused to leave after being served notice.

After refusing to move travellers have been involved in a stand-off with bailiffs and a security firm.

The travellers moved into the site on Ayscough Street on Friday night after breaking through locked gates.

The travellers were served notice on Saturday to leave by 10am Sunday morning. But a security firm and bailiffs found the gates locked and the travellers refused to move. The travellers were then told to leave by 1pm Sunday afternoon but they also ignored that.

The traveller group posted their own notice on the gate to explain why they were legally allowed to be there. They said that section 144 of the Legal aid sentencing and punishment of offenders act 2012 was not in effect.

The section 144 says that it is an offence for a person to squat in a residential building but does not apply to commercial properties. It means that anyone who is squatting on non-residential property is not a crime and action can only be taken by police if they commit crimes on the site.

They can be removed if a court order is received but this can take time to obtain.

It is believed an enforcement officer has said that the intention is to enter the premises and remove them as soon  as possible.
