Tragic news as popular sportsman from New Waltham is sadly found dead.

Phil Merrison 51 was a passionate campaigner for mental health, he was also a popular sportsman and dad of two. He had shared his own personal battles with mental health in public. In a bid to break down the stigma around mental health, Phil set up a support group for those who suffered from mental health issues, particularly for those working in the oil industry. He named it a Platform to talk. Last year he published an inspiring video urging people to find help if they were struggling.

After speaking openly about his own personal troubles. He went on to become a keen ironman competitor and set up his own health and safety business. He represented Grimsby Rugby and Golf Clubs, local football and cricket teams and was also an active member of both Wolds Vets runners and Cleethorpes Tri Club he was a well known and popular figure in the sporting community. It is believed he had found new love and he appeared to be winning his personal battle to better health. Recently he travelled to Spain, America, and Italy for gruelling ironman competitions to raise money for mental health charities.

On Friday tragically Mr. Merrison’s body was found in Woodland near East Ravendale. It is believed that a report will be sent to the Coroner’s office although there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances
