A local man has been found guilty of domestic and animal abuse after assaulting his on-off girlfriend, and inflicting “awful, senseless cruelty” on her dog.

On the 22nd of September Gary Perfect, 35, of Queen Street Brigg, attacked the woman during an argument, kicking her in the stomach, knowing that she had recently undergone an operation there. He then grabbed her dog by its neck and threw it across the room.

He is reported to have pushed her to the floor and kicked her in the stomach as she held tightly to her handbag, suspecting that this is what he was after.

The victim’s arm was injured during the struggle, as she screamed for him to let her go.

Grimsby Crown Court heard how Perfect also assaulted the woman several years earlier when he repeatedly punched her during a car journey.

It is alleged that the girlfriend shouted from the window of the first-floor flat, asking for help.

Another woman passing by spotted what was happening, and asked her if she wanted the police to be called, before Perfect dragged the victim back inside.

He was later arrested.

Andrew Bailey, mitigating, said:

“This was an unpleasant assault and kicking the complainant was utterly beyond the pale.

The kick caused her no injury but undoubtedly it will have hurt her physically and emotionally.”

Judge Peter Kelson QC told Perfect:

“This was a bad incident where, in the lady’s own home, you attacked her and pushed her with both hands to the ground.

You kicked her, knowing that she had an operation to the stomach.

In your temper, you grabbed hold of her dog by the scruff of its neck and threw it across the room, causing it to yelp in pain and you to laugh as you left the premises.

There was some senseless cruelty to the dog witnessed by the complainant.

I am not willing to overlook an act of this gravity and this awful, senseless cruelty to a dog.”

Perfect was jailed for nine months and was given a 10-year restraining order.
