A Final Decision over Grimsby’s Recycling Bins

Last week we announced that a proposal which would see the three-recycling-box system axed and replaced with two larger wheelie bins had been launched by North East Lincolnshire Council. Today a final decision has been made over Grimsby’s recycling bins.

This came after continued complaints during public consultations that the recycling boxes are unfit for purpose.

They have now stated that they are indeed going ahead with the proposal.

Under these new plans, households will have two separate recycling bins instead of three; a blue bin to dispose of paper and card as well as a grey bin for plastic bottles, tins, cans, glass bottles and jars.

The bins themselves will be made from at least 70% recycled material.

It is understood that each bin will be collected separately at fortnightly intervals, meaning each is emptied once a month.

A weekly food waste collection trial will also start in the next 12 months. This will help shape how food waste is collected in the future.

Those with smaller households and properties will be able to request smaller-sized bins.

The proposal received largely positive responses, with residents saying:

“About time! They should have done this from the start. I just hope the council get on with it…”

“Great idea. Much better than those lidless boxes. In bad weather, everything gets blown all over the streets causing an unsightly mess that doesn’t get picked up.”

“Brilliant. Better late than never.”

However, some residents thought that it might create more issues than it would solve:

“Having rubbish collected once a month is ridiculous. I live alone and recycle, but I still manage to fill a bin in a fortnight. I have no idea what families are expected to do!”

“Another daft idea from North East Lincolnshire Council. The bins are a good idea. Having four or five bins and only one monthly collection is poor planning. Actual litter needs to go away at least fortnightly. You cannot leave rotting litter sitting around for a month.”

It has also been announced that North East Lincolnshire Council have plans to gradually reduce the size of Grimsby’s domestic waste bins from 240 to 180 litres by April 2023, despite regular complaints that they are often filled before they are due to be collected.

It has been said that this is in the hope that more residents will utilise the recycling bins.

Households can expect to receive direct correspondence regarding the changes in the coming months and can expect the new bins to arrive in around October.
