2900 jobs axed in Carphone Warehouse closures

2900 jobs are to be axed in Carphone Warehouse closures, as all standalone Carphone Warehouse stores are due to shut in the UK, according to the retailer.

531 shops are due to close their doors. The company have suggested that his is due to a change in “the way people shop.”

They added: “there is never an easy time for an announcement like this, but the turbulent times ahead only underline the importance of acting now, to ensure a business fit for the future.

While 40%, or 1800 of affected colleagues are being given new roles internally, it is expected that the Carphone Warehouse will also make around 2900 redundancies.

They are said to be expecting £90m in losses this year. The company is paying enhanced redundancy, bonuses, and helping them find new jobs.

A statement issued by Carphone Warehouse has said:

“From 3rd April our stand-alone stores will close, but you’ll still find us inside Currys PC World.

We would love to keep our stand-alone stores open, but the way people shop has changed, and we need to change too.

Our shops inside Currys PC World are the future and there are over 300 of them across the country.

They’re modern. They’re specialist. And we hope you’ll find them easy to get to. We continue to offer millions of customers a great choice of phones and networks. Plus, friendly, expert advice – anywhere.

The next few weeks will be tough for many of our colleagues. But we’ll be working hard to support them through this time, including offering alternative roles wherever we can.”

The announcement comes amid the coronavirus pandemic, which saw the UK prime minister urge the British public to avoid non-essential travel and to stay away from pubs and bars on Monday.

However, Dixons Carphone said their “trading has not been impacted materially by Covid-19.”
