Doncaster begins to shut down as Coronavirus lockdown grows

Shops and businesses in Doncaster are now beginning to shut down as the coronavirus lockdown grows across the country.

Although there has been no direct order for shops to close, a number of stores across Doncaster have closed their doors in the wake of the growing crisis.

This follows last night’s announcement by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, which ordered all of the UK’s pubs, restaurants and cafes to close their doors.

Theatres, cinemas, gyms, libraries and leisure centres were also instructed to close, although many already had.

It is currently unclear when or if we should expect retail stores to be ordered to close.

Earlier in the week, people had simply been advised to avoid pubs and restaurants. These changes come as the virus continues to spread and the death toll continues to rise.

There are currently 3983 cases in the UK. 177 people have died.

Doncaster now has at least two confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Additionally, frustrated Doncaster residents have set up a Facebook group to name and shame businesses who are actively attempting to profit from the crisis.

‘Profiteer Watch’ allows people to share details of shops in the town which they feel are exploiting the COVID-19 outbreak to make an additional profit, as there have been a number of reports of shops selling essential items such as hand sanitiser and toilet rolls at hugely inflated prices.

It has accused both Ramshaw Yorkshire Butchery and Jhoots Pharmacy of profiting from panic buying.

The UK government have advised people against unnecessary social contact and travel on public transport. Both bus and rail operators across the country have reduced their services as the UK moves nearer and nearer to a total lockdown.

In Italy, Spain and France, all shops have been closed – with only food stores and pharmacies remaining open as people are told to stay at home. In several European countries, residents are expected to provide a pass should they need to leave their homes.

The UK’s schools have now closed their door indefinitely.
