Woman found in River Welland identified

Following an earlier appeal to identify a body found in the River Welland, Lincolnshire Police have announced that the woman has now been identified.

The woman was an 89-year-old from the Deeping St James area, near Peterborough.

Lincolnshire Police have thanked the public for their support and assistance.

The appeal issued read:

‘We are continuing our appeal to try and identify the body of a woman who was discovered in the River Welland near to houses on Eastgate, Deeping St James.

Extensive enquiries have already been carried out and leaflets will be posted through local residents’ doors to try and identify the woman.

We now have a more detailed description which we hope will jog someone’s memory. The woman is thought to be in her late 70s/80s. She is around 5ft 4 of medium build, with white/grey hair.

She was wearing a brown tartan woollen coat that had a hood, over a long haired bright orange top, a brown silk headscarf worn round the neck, cream trousers, blue socks and blue sandals. It is possible that the woman may have used a wooden walking stick with a curved handle.’

DS Simon Mason said:

“We are currently conducting a number of inquiries to identify the woman, establish the circumstances leading up to her death and trace her family.

“This woman may be local but there is a possibility she may be from a neighbouring county.

“As part of this we are appealing to the public for help and would urge anyone that recognises the description to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident 59 or April 12.

Formal identification is yet to take place.
