Firms urged to apply for government cash during pandemic

Firms are being urged to apply for government cash in the form of grants and loans to help them survive during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In particular, Lincolnshire councils have been given around £200m to distribute to small businesses who are struggling with the economic effects of closures during the UK lockdown.

The Federation of Small Businesses in the county says most firms will benefit, but hopes further measures will be introduced.

Katrina Pierce, from the federation, says:

“We haven’t successfully supported absolutely everyone in our economy.”

“There are some groups who feel little bit out of scope and like they’ve been left behind. So we’re seeking evidence of this, and to tell as many stories as we can of people who are not covered so we can continue to take this evidence to Westminster and tell the Chancellor we’re not there yet.”

On the 20th of March, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced the first set of additional measures to help smaller businesses and the self-employed affected by the pandemic.

These measures, however, were largely aimed at the leisure, hospitality and retail sectors.

It was suggested that those who struggle to get bank loans may find that they are in fact eligible for government grants or loans, under new coronavirus legislation.
But, we spoke to one local business man, who said that although he can demonstrate three years of profits, his bank do not support his industry. He therefore failed the tests required to secure a bank loan, and was subsequently rejected for a government-backed loan last week.
It has been said that urgent reforms are required in order to stop small businesses going bust.

Many MP’s and small firms say that loans are being approved too slowly to support those hit by lockdown measures.

The British Chambers of Commerce said that only 2% of UK’s firms had so far secured the loans.

Banks and financial institutions have lent more than £1.1bn to small and medium-sized enterprises.

More than 6,000 loans have now been provided, with an average value of about £185,000.
