Doncaster MP Ed Miliband slams ‘shambolic’ Covid-19 advice

Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband has slammed the government’s new advice on returning to work during the Covid-19 pandemic, calling it ‘shambolic’ and unclear.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson issued new guidelines on Sunday evening, stating that those in construction and manufacturing, and who are unable to work at home should now be “actively encouraged” to return to work.

Mr Johnson also permitted people to engage in “unlimited outdoor exercise”.

Subsequently, Dominic Raab indicated that people would not be expected to go back to work until Wednesday.

In response to Mr Raab’s statement on BBC Breakfast this morning, Shadow business secretary and MP for Doncaster North Ed Miliband tweeted:

“The PM didn’t say workplace changes applied from Wednesday. He said ‘And the first step is a change of emphasis that we hope that people will act on this week.’ Wednesday was only mentioned in relation to other changes. Words matter. Clarity is essential. This is shambolic.”

“Ordering a return to work in manufacturing and construction with 12 hours notice and no official guidance on how workers can keep safe is irresponsible and wrong.”

“Workers and employers deserve better than shambolic policy-making on the hoof when the stakes are so high” he added.

Boris Johnson said that those who cannot work from home should be ‘actively encouraged’ to go back to work. However, today Raab said that this should not happen until Wednesday.
