Covid-19 fears over travellers on Southsea Common

Fears have been raised in relation to a group of travellers who are currently occupying Southsea Common, after a council leader claimed that one of them “may have Covid-19″.

About a dozen caravans appeared on Southsea Common on Sunday.

It is unclear where they came from.

Leader of Portsmouth City Council, Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, said the council will be taking action to move the travellers on.

There have also been complaints from local residents that travellers have been leaving large amounts of litter on Southsea Common and in the surrounding area.

Councillor Vernon-Jackson said:

“There is a suggestion that one person there has tested positive for Covid-19.

“We have to check that and ensure that the correct procedures are put in place.

“My understanding is that they got onto the common by lifting some of the boulders – we’re taking legal action to move them on.”
