Prime Minister updates England’s lockdown rules

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has updated England’s lockdown rules, stating that groups of up to six people will be able to meet outside in England from Monday.

People will be permitted to meet in gardens and private outdoor spaces, providing that social distancing is observed.

He said that this has been made possible because the government’s tests have been met.

This includes a fall in deaths.

Mr Johnson said:

“These changes mean friends and family will start to meet loved ones,” in what would be a “long awaited and joyful moment”.

It’s been more than eight weeks since this was last possible in England.

The PM has announced that family reunions can take place in private gardens, rather than parks, as long as people continue to stay 2m apart.

When asked why gardens are considered safe for family reunions, the PM states that this is because the risk of the virus spreading between people is much lower outdoors than indoors.

But the risk is still not zero and so social distancing still applies.

He says that from 1 June up to six people can meet outside, provided those from different households stay two metres apart

This follows the announcement that as of the 15 of June, non-essential shops will be permitted to reopen.

Despite the slight relaxation of rules on meeting people outside, those deemed most vulnerable to Covid-19 should continue to shield themselves.
