New laws make it illegal to have another household in your home

As of Monday, new laws are being introduced which make it illegal to have someone from another household in your home, due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

Until now anyone visiting a home that isn’t their own would have meant that the visitor was breaking the law.

But these new laws have now made it illegal for both the visitor and the host.

The new rules apply even if you are in a relationship with the other person or they are family, and come into force as lockdown is eased in England.

Up to six people are now allowed to meet in outdoor spaces, including private gardens.

But the new rules make it clear that you can only go into a house to use the toilet or to walk through to a garden, or if you fall within a category deemed to have a ‘reasonable excuse’, such as attending funerals, vulnerable persons fleeing a risk of violence, carers and those with unavoidable work commitments.

The latest amendment to The Health Protection Regulations 2020 bill stipulates that ‘no person may participate in a gathering which takes place in a public or private place indoors, and consists of two or more persons’.

However, the police have made it clear that they do not have the power to enter a garden to check how many people are there and if they are following the rules.
