Primark says no ‘special discounts’ when shops reopen

High street retailer Primark has said that it has no plans to offer special discounts when its stores reopen.

Primark is planning to reopen all of its 153 stores in England on June 15.

This follows the easing of lockdown restrictions, which allows all non-essential stores to open later this month.

Owner, AB Foods, says that during lockdown the chain has built up almost £2bn-worth of stock to sell.

This is double its normal stockholding.

Many other high street and independent retailers are offering discounts for NHS staff and key-workers.

But, Primark said there would be no “special discounting”.

“The stock will be sold in the normal course of business, albeit at a later date,” a spokesperson said.

The company added that it had £1.5bn of stock on hand plus a commitment to suppliers to buy another £400m-worth.

It normally holds stock worth £900m.

Some of the excess stock will be held back until spring 2021 while the rest will be sold “in the normal course of business”.

There are 37 other Primark stores in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, which are not yet allowed to open as lockdown restrictions are still in place.

They are expected to be open in late June pending “further guidance”.

Elsewhere, the company have already reopened more than 100 stores across Europe including 32 in Germany, 25 in Spain and 20 in the Netherlands, using strict social distancing measures.
