Trial set for Louise Smith murder suspect

A trial date has been set for Shane Mays who is the primary suspect in the Louise Smith murder case.

Mays, 29, of Somborne Drive, Leigh Park, is accused of murdering 16-year-old Louise Smith on the day she went missing, May 8.

Her body was found on Havant Thicket on May 21.

Louise’s cousin, a 29-year-old woman, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, has been released on bail.

Mays is the husband of Louise Smith’s cousin.

He had a provisional date for his trial at Winchester Crown Court set down for November 10 when he appeared in court yesterday.

Mays has not yet entered a plea yet, and remains remanded in custody.

He will also attend a pre-trial hearing on July 15.

He appeared in the dock dressed in a black T-shirt at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court last week charged with Louise’s murder on May 8.

The community have paid tribute to Louise, and have been laying flowers at the entrance of Havant Thicket.

Louise went missing on VE Day, May 8, and had last been seen in Leigh Park at around midday.

Her body was found at Havant Thicket on May 21, following days of police searches.

She was formally identified two days later.
