Motorcyclist dies in collision with ambulance on A16

A motorcyclist has died following a fatal collision with an ambulance on the A16, near Louth.

Lincolnshire Police have now named the victim as Liam Addison, aged 30.

The ambulance was transporting a patient to Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby at the time.

The rider, from Grainthorpe, was at the South Thoresby junction when the incident happened at around 6.30pm last night.

The junction where the collision happened is a staggered one with roads going to the villages of South Thoresby and Calcethorpe.

There are long sweeping bends on either side of the junction.

Lincolnshire Police closed the road for several hours.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said:

“The two vehicles, an EMAS ambulance and a silver Yamaha motorbike collided on the A16 at Calceby just before 6.30 pm on Tuesday.

“The ambulance had travelled from the South Thoresby direction. The motorcycle was travelling towards Ulceby Cross. The ambulance was carrying a patient at the time of the collision.

“They did not suffer any injuries as a result. The two ambulance crew members were also not injured.

“The rider of the motor bike, a man, aged 30, from North Somercotes died at the scene. His next of kin are aware.”

They later updated their statement, saying that the man is from Grainthorpe.

The stretch of road that was closed is over 10 miles long.

Crash investigators carried out forensic examination of the route taken by the Yamaha rider.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area for the remainder of the night.

Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire air ambulance services also attended the scene.

Ben Holdaway, Director of Operations at EMAS, said:

“We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the motorcyclist at this very difficult time.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident.

“The police are now carrying out an investigation into what happened, and it would therefore be inappropriate for us to make any further comment at this time.”

An investigation has been launched into the death of a motorcyclist who collided with an East Midlands Ambulance Service ambulance on the A16 near Louth.
