Pub-pods for physically distant dining

The White Hart introduces ‘dining pods.’

As bars and restaurants across the UK wait for the green light to re-open their doors, many are already considering ways to adapt their venue to the ‘new normal’ of minimal contact dining.

Limiting the number of guests, reducing contact with staff and increased hygiene measures are just some of the initiatives being implemented.

One Oxfordshire gastropub has come up with a unique way to keep diners distant, introducing 10 individual ‘dining pods.’

Owner of The White Hart, Baz Butcher says,

“We made an early reckoning that the pandemic was going to hit the hospitality industry hard and that we’d have to think on our feet to ride it out, during and after the storm.”

Introducing 10 individual dining pods to its courtyard will allow guests to, ‘dine in,’ whilst also remaining physically distant.

The dining pods are being built by a Wytham resident using mostly recycled materials.

Designed, initially, to spaciously accommodate 2 guests, they will eventually act as comfortable outdoor dining spaces for two couples or a family of four.

“We cannot wait to personally welcome guests back into the courtyard and through the door, but we also understand we’re going to have to find ways to mitigate social distancing measures and consumer concerns about returning to enclosed spaces. We hope we’ve got the mix right and that the great British summer holds firm,” says Mr. Butcher.

Contrary to rumours that pubs and beer gardens would open during June, a spokesperson for Boris Johnson has advised that the hospitality industry will not be welcoming customers until at least 4 July.
