Grimsby Town’s Mariners Trust hits out at anti-protesters
Grimsby Town’s Mariners Trust have condemned the behaviour of anti-protesters at Saturday’s Black Lives Matter march in Cleethorpes.
The Mariners Trust is a collective of Town fans which has representation on the club’s board.
They have now criticised anti-protesters “linking themselves with Grimsby Town”, clarifying that they are not welcome at Blundell Park.
This comes after troublemakers attempted to disrupt the peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Cleethorpes.
Officers for Humberside Police formed a line on the beach to separate those protesting peacefully and a small group of anti-protesters, when some began throwing sand at officers and chanting at those involved in the march.
The perpetrators sang England and Grimsby Town football songs and shouted ‘all lives matter’ as they attempted to provoke the protests.
In a statement issued this morning, a spokesperson for the trust said:
“We are very disappointed to hear of the events in Cleethorpes yesterday and the anti social and threatening behaviour of a group linking themselves to our club.
“We condemn this behaviour and those acting in this way are not welcome at BP.
“We will continue to work with The FSA, Kick it Out, The Equality Practice and GTSET to ensure BP is a safe and welcoming place for all.
“Stay safe everyone
“#UTM”
Grimsby Town fan Lloyd Griffith, who attended the demonstration, also hit out at the anti-protesters, Tweeting:
“State of the blokes running towards the peaceful BLM protest at Cleethorpes.
“Thugs just wanting to cause trouble. Chanting Town songs. Proper sad.
“Anyway, congrats to the peaceful, socially distanced protest. #BlackLivesMatter”
The Trust added that it will continue to work with bodies such as the FSA and Kick It Out “to ensure Blundell Park is a safe and welcoming place for all.”
